The Vera Institute of Justice is an independent nonprofit organization that combines expertise in research, demonstration projects, and technical assistance to help leaders in government and civil society improve the systems people rely on for safety and justice. Vera’s Center on Sentencing and Corrections (CSC) works with state and local partners to help them develop cost-effective strategies for protecting public safety. CSC accomplishes this by providing non-partisan technical assistance and research support to government officials and criminal justice professionals. Responsibilities:
The research associate will work on a variety of projects with both program and research staff to advance the mission of the Center. The associate will support the work of the Center by conducting quantitative, qualitative and policy research. The primary responsibilities are to:
• Manage and analyze computerized databases using SPSS and other programs
• Construct and prepare data collection instruments and interview materials
• Recruit and interview study participants
• Conduct rigorous statistical analyses
• Research and write research and policy reports
• Research and write briefing and research memoranda
• Present findings of research and policy analysis to diverse audiences
Qualifications:
We are looking for a candidate with the following qualities and skills:
• Master’s degree in sociology, criminal justice, public policy, or a closely related discipline
• At least three years social science research experience
• Proven ability to design and conduct statistical analysis using SPSS and other programs
• Excellent communications skills, including writing, editing, listening, public speaking and presentation.
• Demonstrated knowledge of sentencing and corrections systems, policies, trends and research strongly preferred.
• Experience designing and conducting focus group a plus.
• Experience writing proposals and grants a plus.
• Knowledge of SQL a plus.
• Willingness to travel outside of New York City occasionally
