The Vera Institute of Justice is an independent nonprofit organization that combines expertise in research, demonstration projects, and technical assistance to help leaders in government and civil society improve the systems people rely on for safety and justice. Vera’s Center on Sentencing and Corrections (CSC) works with state and local partners to help them develop cost-effective strategies for protecting public safety. CSC accomplishes this by providing non-partisan technical assistance and research support to government officials and criminal justice professionals.

Responsibilities
This position, based in Vera’s New York City office, offers an extraordinary opportunity for an experienced person to join a dynamic and innovative staff. The Program Associate will work on several projects and gain exposure to leading practitioners in the field of sentencing and corrections. The following are the primary responsibilities:
• Assist in managing and coordinating the Center’s technical assistance to project clients and participants, including intensive on-site assistance in the field.
• Research and write program materials, including publications and briefing and research memoranda.
• Develop and maintain relationships with professional colleagues and clients.
• Assist in grant writing and program development.
• Support research staff in interpreting and presenting data analysis and evaluation findings to clients.

Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate with the following qualities and skills:
• A bachelor’s degree with at least four years of related work experience or a graduate degree (JD or master’s degree in political science, criminal justice, criminology, or public policy) with some work experience.
• Demonstrated interest in or knowledge of policy development, government, or criminal justice.
• Ability to manage work on multiple projects effectively and efficiently.
• Strong interpersonal and communications skills.
• Strong research and writing skills.
• Willingness and ability to work independently as well as with a team.
• Willingness to travel outside of New York City frequently.
