The Vera Institute of Justice (Vera) seeks an experienced senior researcher to serve as its Director of Research. The Director of Research is responsible for setting the research agenda for the Institute, building the research department’s funding base, developing diverse streams of funding, and providing leadership to the Institute’s researchers. The job calls for a strong grasp of a wide variety of social science research methods, a vision for the role of rigorous research in the practical reform of justice institutions, an ability to guide and supervise the work of senior colleagues, the discipline to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and the ability to collaborate with practitioners, government officials, and institutional colleagues.

Background
Vera is an independent, non-partisan, nonprofit organization that combines expertise in research, demonstration projects, and technical assistance. Its mission is to help leaders in government and civil society reform policy and practice to improve the systems that people rely on for justice and safety. Vera's research department conducts three types of research: exploratory research on issues of interest to Vera, a government partner, or other nonprofit organizations; evaluations of innovative programs, including Vera's own demonstration projects; and applied research that contributes to knowledge while enhancing justice system policy and practice.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a substantive knowledge of several subject areas in which Vera conducts its work and a familiarity with criminal justice issues generally. This knowledge will be demonstrated by a record of scholarship and publications in peer-reviewed journals. Equally important, candidates should be eager to engage intellectually with the range of subjects of Vera’s work and with the role of research in the practical reform of justice institutions. 

The ideal candidate will bring the following professional experience and personal qualities to the role:
• A PhD in a relevant field
• At least eight years of experience designing, carrying out, and being the principal investigator on research projects
• Substantive knowledge of several subject areas in which Vera conducts its work
• Ability to plan, direct, and manage the research of a large and diverse organization
• A demonstrated interest and skill in leading, managing, contributing to and encouraging the growth of social science research, whether within a university, a government agency, or an independent institution
• A record of success winning, managing, and fulfilling government and philanthropic research grants and contracts
• A record of scholarship and publications in peer-reviewed journals
• The ability to maintain a non-partisan and respectful collaboration with public officials, community groups, funders, and government partners
• A commitment to sustaining a diverse, stimulating, and respectful workplace.

The Research Director reports to the Institute’s director.
